If you’re looking to make changes to your bathroom, one of the main decisions you’ll likely have to make is on the style of shower that you’ll be having installed.
Whilst most showers are supplied with hot water from your home’s boiler, there is another option – one that you probably haven’t given to much thought.
An electric shower, like the ones that we install here at TNS Electrical Services, may be the right option for you. Whilst many homeowners don’t consider electric showers thanks to a reputation that the appliances have built up over the years, electric showers in 2021 are a great alternative to a standard, boiler-powered shower.
Here are just a few of the reasons why an electric shower may be the right choice for you.
Developed Technology
You’ve probably been put off by the idea of an electric shower in the past due to misconceptions that all electric showers operate with low water pressure, that the water that they provide isn’t hot enough or that electric shower units aren’t exactly the easiest on the eye.
The truth is that these ideas come from electric showers of years gone by. These days, the technology behind electric showers has developed to a point that they work just as well as standard boiler-powered showers, delivering a great level of water pressure and reaching equally high temperatures.
Modern electric showers also look great, too. No longer attached to white plastic units like the ones that you may have seen in the past, modern electric showers often come with sleek, contemporary units, often made from gun metal or steel.
With changing technology, electric showers often provide many of the same benefits as a standard boiler-powered shower – and come with other benefits of their own.
Eco-Friendly
Did you know that water use accounts for around 6% of the UK’s total annual carbon emissions? Furthermore, 90% of that 6% comes from heating the hot water used in UK households.
With a standard boiler-powered shower, hot water is pre-heated and stored until used. This means that a great deal of the water heated within our homes every day will usually go to waste.
Alternatively, electric showers work by only heating the amount of water that needs to be used at any one time. When switched on, cold water is pumped to the unit attached to the electric shower, where an element inside the unit heats the water at high speed, so that by the time it reaches the person showering, the water is hot enough to shower in.
Once the user is finished showering and the unit is switched off, no water is heated. This means that little to no water is wasted through the use of an electric shower.
For this reason, electric showers can be an environmentally-friendly alternative to their boiler-powered counterparts, as there is no need for a pre-heated tank of water, much of which will go to waste.
On average, switching to an electric shower could save up to 12,000 litres of water each year!
Affordable – And May Save You Money
Not only is the initial investment into an electric shower unit generally less than the average cost of a standard shower unit, but an electric shower may also save you money in the long run.
The average cost of a high-quality electric shower runs between around £80 – £150. This is much lower than the average cost of a high-quality standard shower set, which could set you back almost as much as £350!
Furthermore, if your home runs on a water metre, you could be saving plenty on bills in the long run. According to This Is Money, a ten minute shower using an electric unit will cost an average of 15p, whilst the same amount of time using a standard shower unit is likely to cost around 23p. It may sound like a small saving, but when you factor in at least one shower each day for each person within your home, the pennies certainly mount up over time!
There’s also savings to be had if your home runs on a water metre, as the flow rates of an electric shower tend to be less than that of a power shower.
